The marble Stradun runs three hundred metres from gate to gate, the wall circuit above it runs almost two kilometres with the sea on every side, and the lanes between hold baroque churches, one small republic's worth of palaces, and cats asleep on sun-warmed stone.

The Srd panorama · 405 m
The cable car first climbed Srd in 1969 and became the city's favourite shortcut to perspective. Destroyed in the war that followed 1991, it was rebuilt and reopened in 2010 — four minutes from the north walls to the summit station. Your driver can also take you up the winding service road, an adventure in itself.
On top sits Fort Imperial, raised by Napoleon's forces around 1812 and a defence post again during the 1991–92 siege, when the mountain's defenders held the summit above the shelled city. It now houses a museum of the Homeland War — worth half an hour before the golden-hour photographs.

A quake levels most of the city and kills thousands. The baroque Stradun you walk today is the rebuild.

The flag comes down
Napoleon's marshal dissolves the Republic by decree after 450 years. The walls were never taken by force.

The old city joins the World Heritage list — the walls above it are already seven centuries old.

1991–95
Siege, then restoration
Shells fall on the old town in the 1991–92 siege. The roofs are re-tiled and the city restored through the 1990s — look for the brighter terracotta.

- One circuit is 1,940 m with little shade — walk them early or in the last hours of light, and carry water in summer. Entry is ticketed separately.
- The cable car
- Four minutes to the Srd summit; queues are shortest before mid-morning. Your driver can also take you up by road when the wind stops the cars.
- Old Town access
- Pedestrian-only — your driver drops you at the gate, waits nearby, and you message when you're ready to move on.
- Cruise arrivals
