Dubrovnik → Ston → Makarska → Split
The route hugs the shore most of the way — over the Rijeka Dubrovačka bridge, past the Pelješac turn at Ston, briefly through the nine-kilometre Neum corridor of Bosnia & Herzegovina, then under the grey wall of the Biokovo massif with the Makarska Riviera's beaches strung below.
Your driver handles the border formalities, pauses at the panoramas worth a photograph, and times the day so you arrive relaxed — at your hotel, the ferry quay or the airport, whichever the itinerary needs. The same journey works just as well in the Split → Dubrovnik direction.

The palace that became a city.
What waits at the far end of the drive: a Roman emperor's retirement home that seventeen centuries turned into the living centre of Split.

Construction begins
Diocletian orders a fortified retirement palace on the bay of Aspalathos, faced in white limestone from the island of Brač.

The emperor retires
Diocletian abdicates — the only Roman emperor to walk away voluntarily — and moves in to tend his gardens by the sea.

The palace becomes a town
Refugees from ruined Salona settle inside the walls; the emperor's mausoleum becomes a cathedral. It has been inhabited ever since.

The palace and the historic core around it join the World Heritage list.

A living monument
Around 3,000 people still live inside the Roman walls — shops in the cellars, cafés on the peristyle, laundry lines over imperial stone.
